WONDROUS SKIES
This series is my current work in progress. There is so much happening in the world at large and on my own home front, all of which has been devastating. While we find our feet, I've been looking to the skies for a bit of escapism. The sky is a metaphor for what's possible. I'm hopeful that we begin to move together, rather than as individuals. I'm seeking to turn outwards again to connect with others and build community, rather than focusing solely on self-help and self-care. There is so much talk of "wellness", but in reality many of us are deeply unwell. This series aims to tap into what brings us together, where we can see ourselves in the other, and where we can let go and dream a little.
VIBRANT OCEANS
After living in Canberra for eight years I moved to Brisbane in 2023. Queensland is hot and has a long coastline with many beautiful beaches. It is the place where I feel most 'home' in Australia as it reminds me so much of Durban. Being sub-tropical the humidity is oddly comforting, and the beach invigorating. Moving to Brisbane inspired this series of ocean paintings. They speak to my love of the beach, the ocean, the sun and sand. They also reflect the many feelings of moving. Whether that's to a new country, a new city or just a new house, the feelings are always intense - for good or bad.
VIVID FLOWERS
Lotus Lovers
These two lotus flowers came from a place of rebirth and renewal. They were a nod to my yoga journey, but also a reflection of how I was feeling. At the time I had been in Australia for 18 months and through some turmoil. At the time of painting I had adjusted enough to feel alive, new strength and growth, optimism and excitement for the present moment and the future.
Pink Cherry Blossoms
This piece was painted back in South Africa. I painted it specifically for my best friend, Cherry. She did have it hung in her place for a while, and then years later it made its way back to me. The flowers were a direct representation of how I felt about Cherry. She was (is) beautiful, elegant and quietly confident.
BRILLIANT SUCCULENTS
The story behind these succulent paintings was me making a conscious choice to notice the small things in life. I noticed many things including these beautiful succulents in my flat. These rather small and seemingly insignificant beings held so much joy for me personally through their shape and colour. They symbolised greenery and life in my tiny flat in the dead of winter. It was really a way for me to practice mindfulness. Painting these succulents brought me right into the present moment, grounding me in what was a challenging time. This creative process taught me that even the smallest elements have a profound impact on our well-being.
